Rediscovering Childhood Joys

After a long week of work, I found myself once again drawn to the US National Whitewater Center, a place that calls my soul. As I drove there, memories of summers spent at Sound View Camp and Retreat Center flooded my mind, creating a sense of nostalgia and connection. I spent most of my childhood and early adult summers there, both as a camper and working on staff.

Arriving just in time before it closed, I embarked on The Ridge Obstacle Challenge Course, basking in the thrills of climbing walls, swinging across wooden planks, and zipping down a short zip line. The experience brought back the carefree joy of childhood, reminiscent of the camp that shaped my early years.

As the sun began to set, I settled cozily in an adirondack chair with a cider in hand, near the frozen upper pond, surrounded by the soothing sounds of acoustic folk music. Families and friends enjoyed ice skating on the glassy ice freshly smoothed by the zamboni. The skating areas are surrounded by trees and the crisp scent of pine filled the air. Sitting there, I felt a profound sense of peace – a moment where worries and cares seemed to fade away.

I eagerly awaited the sun to set further, anticipating the exploration of the enchanting Canyon Night Trail. The trail was packed with activities for all ages. Some of my favorite features included a glowing black light rock climbing wall, swings in the heart of the woods, and serene hammocks under the stars. Crossing illuminated suspension bridges, I marveled at the beauty of the night.

Though I didn't take on the Night Zipline this trip, the Canyon Night Trail proved to be a spectacular adventure. This evening's visit to the US National Whitewater Center was a perfect way to conclude the workweek, offering a transition into the weekend with a refreshed mindset. As I ponder the unknown adventures that lie ahead, one thing is certain – this place feels like home.
